I got involved with one roller derby league as a ref about a year and a half ago, and my second league (helping out a junior league) a year ago. Though I've stopped skating, I'm still involved with both leagues, and I often look on Etsy to see what derby girls are making. That's how I stumbled across Derby Girl Designs. A player on the Chattanooga Roller Girls, she makes super cute vintage skate pendants and these great bearing pendants with a variety of colors available!

Today's Featured Friday artisan is an Etsy seller I stumbled across recently. Anita Klein Designs makes the cutest plush penguins, including a Jedi, Harry Potter, and other geeky penguins. She also makes plenty of normal penguins, in just about every color of the rainbow (and even some patterns).

In addition to the plush penguins, Anita Klein Designs also makes pillows and other plush animals. But since I adore penguins, they're the ones that catch my attention the most. I'm still trying to decide if I'd rather have her make a Ravenclaw penguin, or if I should just buy a purple penguin and call it good. Maybe I'll have to do both! :)

I crochet a lot of arm warmers, but I'm totally coveting these knitted fingerless gloves from Tiny Bully. There are some things that you can make as a knitted item so much easier than you can make as a crocheted item, and the windows and lettering of the TARDIS are definitely among them.

Today's Featured Friday artist is one that I've had my eye on for some time: Broken Fingers Art. This shop sells earrings, necklaces, and rings made from Shrinky Dinks in a variety of shapes and colors. I love the really vibrant colors on so many of the pieces! There are occasional times when I wish that I hadn't stretched my earlobes, and when I spot a new creation from Broken Fingers Art is when the longing for "normal" ears comes back. Her work caught my eye because of the bright colors and absolutely adorable little critters that you can knit from her patterns. It makes me wish that I knew how to knit! I am holding out hope, however, because her shop announcement indicates that she's working on crochet patterns as well!

I recently met CrystalynKae at an EtsyRain meetup and fell in love with her gorgeous bags. I am not really much of a purse sort of girl, but these bags are much more than purses. I could fit a serious amount of stuff in them, which makes them both cute AND practical!

The pleat detail on this bag is so adorable, and it is also available on other styles of CrystalynKae's bags. I like this style because it's a cross-body strap, which always makes me feel a little more secure when out and about. But she has a variety of styles and sizes to choose from, ranging from small clutches up to laptop totes, so nearly anyone in search of a purse or bag can find the shape and size they need!

The Wedding Shop Recap

I got married on Saturday. During the wedding, several of our guests asked me about various items I was wearing or that were a part of the wedding. There was at least one person who I promised to E-mail with the Etsy seller information, but I promptly forgot both the question and the questioner. (I have an excuse. All of the crazy adrenaline had drained by that point, and I was a bit out of it.) So here's the list of everything that we bought from Etsy for the wedding, along with sellers. :)

After Jeremy bought me my engagement ring, I told him that I thought boys should get engagement presents as well. He happened to be in need of a new wallet, so I found a local seller, Moxie and Oliver, who makes handmade leather wallets and brands a message onto them. So I wrote a little lovey note to Jeremy for her to brand into his new wallet. Now he has a little reminder of my love that is always with him.

My necklace pendant (the "Something Old, Something New" bit in the shape of the TARDIS) came from Imagination Emporium (which I mentioned late in June). She had done a different, much longer, Doctor Who quote in that shape, which I thought was brilliant, and so I contacted her to see if she could work a shorter quote into the same shape. The reasoning behind this, by the way, is that the TARDIS itself is arguably old, new, borrowed, and blue. :)

My earrings (which were not bought for the wedding, but I got a lot of compliments on them) came from Frozen Fire. They're solid glass, with dichroic coloring. The smallest size he makes are 3mm (I think that's 6 gauge), so those of you with standard piercing sizes are out of luck.

My dress came from Kimmi. She is a local dressmaker who I had bought another dress from previously (which I wore to a wedding where I was a guest a couple of years ago). When I started thinking about dresses, I was looking at rockabilly style dresses, but I couldn't find anything I loved. So I went to Kimmi's site instead, and found the dress I wore straight away. I didn't think it would fit me, but she had me try it on anyway. Once I had it on, I was sold. I tried on two others, but then went back to the lovely crocheted dress. She made an alteration to the lining for me to help with the fit, and I crocheted the shoulder straps.

Our rings came from Marlo at I Make Cute Stuff. Marlo is one of my good friends from EtsyRain, and she was happy to work with the unusual shape of my engagement ring to make a ring that can be worn with it or without it. These rings are based on her Secret Promise Rings, which means they do, in fact, have messages inside of them.

The flower fans were a collaboration between me, my friend Kayce (Nue to Me and several other shops), and Patty at Full Blooms. I crocheted several blue roses, Kayce made hers out of scraps of T-shirts and buttons, and Patty made hers from silk. Patty also assembled them and attached them to the fans that Cindy and I carried. I took a few extras and bundled them together for the tossing bouquet.

The garter that Jeremy tossed came from Kizette. She makes pairs of lace and satin garters with d20s attached to them--one to keep and one to toss. Of course, the dice don't really roll any more, but that's okay!

The wedding favors, which I talked about last month, were made by Recycled Ideas. She makes handmade paper with flower seeds in the mix, so that the paper is plantable. I had a stamp made by TerBear Collectables, and stamped all of the flowers with a water soluble ink. The stamp (which was a little off on some of the favors) is of a pair of hands in the shape of a heart, with our names above and our wedding date below.

We also got gifts for some of the people who helped out with the wedding on Etsy. My best woman, Cindy got a necklace made by my friend Tricia, Pequest Designs. Andrew (the best man) and Kindred (the officiant and also a good friend of Jeremy's) got engraved flasks from Precision Engraving. And I had 4 My Angels make a custom apron for my Uncle Joe, who was our barbeque chef, that reflects the several names he's known by in our family.

DIY Wedding Favors

Today, I've got a fun suggestion for some do-it-yourself wedding favors, made from a couple of items from Etsy. This also happens to be a sneak preview of what I did for my own wedding favors. :)

Start out with some of these beautiful handmade plantable paper shapes from Recycled Ideas. Each of these small pieces of paper (which is made from recycled junk mail) is loaded with flower seeds, so your guests can take them home and plant them. The paper disintegrates, and flowers appear! What a great way to make the world more beautiful and to give your guests a lasting reminder of your wedding!

And so that your guests remember where the favors came from, you can stamp them with biodegradable ink using one of these stamps from Terbear Collectibles. I probably shouldn't count how many of Terbear's stamps I have, but I love them and use them all the time. I picked out this "save the date" style stamp because I liked the hands in the shape of a heart and including the date of the wedding on the favor. I think I'll also probably use the stamp on the back of envelopes for thank you cards and other letters.

One important tip to mention: make sure that the stamp you choose is smaller than the paper shapes you choose. I had small flower shapes and a stamp that was REALLY close to the same size, so I ended up with a few mis-stamps. That's okay, they'll still grow just fine! They're just not quite pretty enough to scatter across the tables.

So there you have it! Favors that could be kept as mementos of your wedding, or can be planted and enjoyed by more than just your guests!

While I adore her Three Crows print, this one, called Story Book, got my attention right away. Featured Friday: Captain Magnificent

Those who know me know that I'm pretty much obsessed with Star Wars. In fact, my fiancé and I spent our day off on Monday watching all six of the movies (in numerical order), just so we could say we had done it. So it's not surprising that I LOVE Captain Magnificent on Etsy. His sugar skull styled Star Wars characters are amazingly intricate. Even though I'm a supporter of the Rebellion, I think that the Imperial characters translate better to sugar skulls, and I have a set of the Imperial Trio just waiting to be framed and hung up. Good thing we're going to Ikea this weekend!

Although I'm not much of a science person, I LOVE these Chemistry Crayon Labels from Que Interesante. The shop's tag line is "Where Geek Meets Art," and it absolutely fits! The crayon labels are meant to be put on a set of crayons to indicate what chemical compounds can be burned to produce that color. If only I had had a set of these when I was a kid, I could have tried to convince my relatives to burn all sorts of interesting things in their fireplace. :) Que Interesante also makes greeting cards with diagrams of chemical compounds that match the sentiment of the card. Too cute! :)

Based on the number of sales that Rockitbot has on Etsy, I'd say I'm a little late to this party. But when I saw the Nerd Herder wallet on the front page of Etsy this morning, I only took long enough to find my favorite one before I bought it. After a couple of adventures lately at/after derby when I've stuck my iPhone in one knee sock and my money/ID/credit card in the other knee sock, I can REALLY get behind having a wallet that will hold all of that and then some. I also got the shoulder strap, so I can carry it when I have no pockets big enough for my stuff (which, let's face it, ladies, is MOST of the time).

I'm SO looking forward to this purchase arriving! :)
